More than 11 million crashes take place on U.S. roads every year, resulting in more than 2.5 million police-reported injuries and more than 40,000 deaths.
Unfortunately, most of the serious crashes taking place on our roads today are not truly accidents. Rather, they are the direct result of failed highway safety policies -- policies that actually encourage and promote dangerous, irresponsible driving.
The Partnership for Safe Driving is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating Americans about all forms of dangerous driving and halting the epidemic of motor vehicle crashes in our society. Founded in February 1997 and headquartered in Washington, DC, we are working to change the driving culture in America through education, research, and grassroots activism.

A Call to Drivers: Put Down the Phone
Published: January 12, 2009
Today the National Safety Council called on motorists to stop using cell phones and messaging devices while driving, and said they will urge governors and legislators in all 50 states and the District of Columbia to ban this dangerous behavior.
Crashprevention.org would like to thank the National Safety Council for its recent announcement to begin addressing the growing danger of distracted driving on our roads and to put their significant weight and influence behind this effort.
We at the Partnership for Safe Driving have been advocating for years on the need for legislation to make the use of these devices illegal while driving, but our lack of funding has prevented us from working vigorously to effect change on a national scale.
The Safety Council brings needed weight to bare on these efforts and helps carry the water on the issue of distracted driving at this critical time. As text messaging while driving becomes commonplace, the need for strong legislation is becoming increasingly urgent. We wholeheartedly thank and stand behind the Safety Council on this issue. If successful, these efforts will save countless lives and prevent debilitating injuries that result from distracted driving every day.
